Don't buy the lie
My child,
A thought crossed my mind today, and I wanted to share it with you. You know how we often hear the phrase "buy the lie"? As in, "I bought the lie that…" or "Did you buy the lie…". It made me wonder why we rarely, if ever, hear the opposite - "buy the truth"?
I think the reason behind this is quite profound. When we "buy a lie," we often end up paying a price, whether in terms of our peace of mind, relationships, self-esteem, or even worse. Lies have a cost, sometimes much more significant than we anticipate.
Once, I bought the lie that I needed a piercing to be cool. I got the piercing, and it didn't make me cool. In fact, the ones I cared most about didn't like it at all. Not only was the piercing painful but there was a lot of emotional pain in dealing with the aftermath. That was an expensive lie for me.
But the truth? The truth is priceless. It's free in the most genuine sense of the word. I think an essential attribute of truth is that it has no cost. But the more true something is, the more valuable it becomes. And despite its immense worth, it remains free - because it's true.
Can you think of a lie that you bought and paid for? Or maybe you are making payments on one right now? What would the truth be in this situation? What's something you know is true beyond any doubt? I hope it's the truth that you are loved.
So why would we 'buy' something freely available to us? Let's start appreciating the value of truth more and stop falling for the lies that cost us so much.
Love,
Dad
